And yet according to the wiki page for electricity usage in Sub-Saharan Africa, about 800 million people use the equivalent power of running a 100 space heaters 24/7 for a year. Oh what is that? The source is from a book written in 1972? Ah OK, maybe put that in the damn article then. This article is still unchanged and has been up for longer than a year, when I last checked. That's why most people will tell hmyou to use Wikipedia as a search engine where you can start with a basic overview and then follow the sources, but don't believe everything as it is stated.

In my first language Wiki literally sucks. I've seen cases when actual documents from archives, available on request, were rejected as sources ("because access is limited" - access to books is also limited because, you know, you have to go to store and buy them). Yeah, the problem is that the editors in power often curate the pages without real oversight and absolute power. There is a very well made documentary on YouTube on how bias Wikipedia can be because of that. Sure, there are sources on the bottom, but that doesn't mean very much. If I write an article on how vaccines cause autism, cite the Wakefield study and then actively supress any other sources on the page because I am a trusted editor and high up in my little circle, then boom: unreliable wiki article. Might not work for something as well known as the vaccine thing, but how much do you know about the Armenian genocide? The Muslim genocide in India? Chinese concentration camps? Got the point?

In my mis-spent youth I did some vandalizing of Wikipedia. I'm no proud of it now, but I did do it. For quite a while I had my friend's name inserted in dozens of pages. It was harmless stuff for the most part, just inserting his name as spokesman of a company or as inventor of some minor thing. Some of those pages lasted for months and months before it was discovered and all came tumbling down. The point is that it IS possible to have bad information on Wikipedia. I generally consider it 99% reliable, but if you're trying to use it as a source for things, there is a real, if slim, danger of using bad information. The solution is to simply check the sources and use those as your sources for whatever you're citing.

That's why you cite the sources on wikipedia lol. Worse case is I use it as a launching point to get some interesting information and look for my own sources from Scholarly stuff to support it.
